What was announced
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the Alabama Toll Road, Bridge, and Tunnel Authority will receive a Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan of up to $2.52 billion for the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project. The department described it as the largest infrastructure project in Alabama history.
Planned corridor changes
The project includes a new six-lane, cable-stayed bridge over the Mobile River, interchange and traffic-flow improvements, and additional Bayway capacity. The Department of Transportation says the project will reconstruct about one mile of the existing Bayway and restripe the full 7.5-mile Bayway from two to three lanes in each direction.
Why freight operators are watching
Federal transportation officials say the project is intended to reduce a major I-10 bottleneck and improve access to the Port of Mobile. Hazardous materials are currently prohibited from using the George Wallace Tunnel, forcing hundreds of trucks each day to use alternate routes. The planned corridor is expected to provide a more direct interstate option.
Keep the timeline in perspective
A financing announcement does not change freight conditions immediately. Construction schedules, lane configurations, tolling, traffic patterns, and project completion still matter. Businesses should continue planning around current road conditions while monitoring verified project updates from ALDOT and federal transportation officials.
NDE regional perspective
The investment reinforces the long-term importance of Alabama's Gulf Coast freight corridor. Businesses moving goods through Alabama and the Mississippi Gulf Coast should continue reviewing delivery windows, alternate routes, and receiving plans as construction progresses.
